What is Ibrance used for?

Palbociclib is prescribed for hormone receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer, in adults including men. It is always used together with endocrine therapy — an aromatase inhibitor such as letrozole as initial therapy, or fulvestrant after prior endocrine treatment — never on its own. It blocks CDK4 and CDK6, enzymes cancer cells rely on to divide, slowing tumour growth while endocrine therapy cuts the hormonal signal.

Dosage and how to take Ibrance

• One tablet daily for 21 days, then 7 days off — a 28-day cycle, repeated as your oncologist advises
• Swallow whole at about the same time daily; do not crush, chew or split
• If your pack contains capsules rather than film-coated tablets, take them with food — our pharmacist will confirm which presentation you received
• Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice throughout treatment
• Missed or vomited dose: skip it and take the next dose at the usual time — never double up

Monitoring and essential safety

Palbociclib lowers white blood cell counts in most patients. Expect a complete blood count before each cycle (and on Day 15 of the first two cycles); report fever, chills or infection signs immediately. Rare but serious lung inflammation (pneumonitis) can occur — urgent review for new breathlessness or cough. Ibrance can harm an unborn baby: effective contraception is required during and after treatment for both women and men. Common effects: fatigue, nausea, mouth sores, hair thinning, infections.

Storage

Store below 30°C in the original pack, out of reach of children. Return unused oncology medicines to a pharmacy for disposal.
