What is Xolair used for?

  • Moderate-to-severe persistent allergic asthma, as add-on to inhaled corticosteroids, in patients sensitised to year-round allergens whose asthma stays uncontrolled
  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria (long-lasting hives) in patients from 12 years whose symptoms persist despite antihistamines

Omalizumab works upstream of other allergy medicines: it binds immunoglobulin E (IgE) before IgE can arm mast cells, preventing the histamine release that drives airway inflammation and hives.

Dosage (specialist-determined)

  • Allergic asthma: dose (75–600mg) and interval (every 2 or 4 weeks) are calculated from your pre-treatment IgE level and body weight — there is no single standard dose
  • Chronic urticaria: typically 300mg by subcutaneous injection every 4 weeks

Injections are given under the skin by a healthcare professional. Because a small risk of delayed anaphylaxis exists, doses are usually followed by an observation period; self-injection is considered only for selected patients after training and initial supervised doses.

Essential safety information

Severe allergic reactions can occur after any dose, even after long uneventful use — know the signs (throat tightness, wheeze, faintness, hives) and seek emergency care immediately. Xolair is an add-on controller: do not stop your steroid inhaler abruptly and do not use it for an acute attack. Improvement can take several weeks. Common effects: injection-site reactions, headache, joint pain. The prefilled-syringe needle cap contains latex.

Storage

Keep refrigerated at 2–8°C in the original carton; do not freeze; protect from light. Refrigerate immediately on delivery.
