Uses of the Octagam 2.5g Injection

Octagam 2.5g Injection uses in medical conditions related to immune deficiencies and autoimmune disorders.

Primary Immunodeficiencies

Octagam is indicated for patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID), which include:

  • X-linked agammaglobulinemia
  • Congenital agammaglobulinemia
  • Common variable immunodeficiency
  • Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome
  • Severe combined immunodeficiencies

How Does Octagam 2.5g Injection Work?

Octagam 2.5g injection works by giving a concentrated dose of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to the body. IgG is a type of antibody that helps in the immune system by helping to fight off infections and regulate the immune response.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

Antibody Deficiency: Primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI), where the body doesn’t give enough antibodies on its own. This leaves individuals susceptible to frequent infections.

Antibody Replacement: Octagam 2.5g injection contains a dose of IgG antibodies that is made from the human plasma. These antibodies supplement the body’s own immune response.

Immune System Boost: Octagam serves additional IgG antibodies that help the immune system to:

Fight infections: It overcomes viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.

Regulate immune response: It overcomes immune reactions that can lead to autoimmune diseases.

How Often Octagam 2.5g is Given?

Octagam 2.5g injection is given every 3 to 4 weeks for patients with primary humoral immunodeficiencies. The recommended dosage is between 300 and 600 mg/kg body weight (6-12 mL/kg) during each infusion.

Primary Humoral Immunodeficiency (PI):

Initial Dose: 200-400 mg/kg body weight, administered over 2-5 days.

Maintenance Dose: 200-400 mg/kg body weight every 3-4 weeks, adjusted based on antibody levels.

Autoimmune Diseases:

Kawasaki Disease: 2 g/kg body weight, administered over 1-2 days.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome: 0.4 g/kg body weight daily for 2-3 days, followed by weekly maintenance doses.

Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP): 0.4 g/kg body weight, administered over 1-2 days, followed by weekly or biweekly maintenance doses.
