How Does Octagam 2.5g Injection Work?
Octagam 2.5g injection works by giving a concentrated dose of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to the body. IgG is a type of antibody that helps in the immune system by helping to fight off infections and regulate the immune response.
Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
Antibody Deficiency: In conditions like primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI), the body doesn’t produce enough antibodies on its own. This leaves individuals susceptible to frequent infections.
Antibody Replacement: Octagam 2.5g injection contains a concentrated dose of IgG antibodies derived from human plasma. When administered, these antibodies supplement the body’s own immune response.
Immune System Boost: The additional IgG antibodies provided by Octagam help the immune system to:
Fight infections: Neutralize viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.
Regulate immune response: Prevent excessive immune reactions that can lead to autoimmune diseases.
How Often Octagam 2.5g is Given?
Octagam 2.5g injection is given every 3 to 4 weeks for patients with primary humoral immunodeficiencies. The recommended dosage is between 300 and 600 mg/kg body weight (6-12 mL/kg) during each infusion.
