Additional Details
What is EMLA Cream used for?
EMLA 5% cream is one of the most widely used topical anaesthetics in the world. In Pakistan, it is used across multiple settings:
- Laser hair removal and laser skin treatments: Applied 60–90 minutes before the session under cling wrap to significantly reduce the stinging and burning sensation associated with laser procedures. Widely used at dermatology clinics and beauty centres.
- Minor dermatological procedures: Skin biopsies, mole removal, wart treatment, dermal filler injections, and other minor skin procedures. Typically applied 45–60 minutes before the procedure.
- Vaccination in children: Paediatricians recommend EMLA before routine injections to reduce pain and distress in infants and children. Applied 60 minutes before the injection.
- IV cannulation and blood tests: Applied to the insertion site before venesection or cannulation to reduce pain of needle insertion, particularly useful for children and needle-phobic patients.
- Tattooing: Applied 60–90 minutes before the session to reduce pain during tattooing. Compatible with skin preparation for tattooing.
- Waxing: Applied 30–45 minutes before waxing sensitive areas to reduce discomfort.
How to use EMLA Cream — step by step
- Step 1: Clean and dry the skin area to be treated
- Step 2: Apply a thick layer of EMLA cream — do not rub in; the cream should form a visible white layer on the skin
- Step 3: Cover the cream with an airtight occlusive dressing (cling wrap works well) to prevent evaporation and improve absorption
- Step 4: Leave in place for the recommended time (see below)
- Step 5: Remove the dressing and wipe off the cream thoroughly before the procedure
- Step 6: Proceed with the laser treatment, procedure, injection, or tattooing session
How long before should I apply EMLA?
- Minor procedures and vaccination: 45–60 minutes
- Laser hair removal: 60–90 minutes
- Tattooing and waxing: 60–90 minutes
- IV cannulation / blood test: 45–60 minutes
- Maximum application time: 5 hours on intact skin (longer on genital mucosa may be used under medical supervision)
Dosage by age for vaccination

- Children 1–5 years: up to 1g per site — apply 1 hour before
- Children 6 years and above/adults: 1–2g per site — apply 1 hour before
Paediatric note: For newborns under 3 months, consult your paediatrician before using EMLA as the safety profile in very young infants requires specialist assessment.
