What does Myfortic do?

After a kidney transplant your immune system will try to attack the new organ. Mycophenolic acid blocks an enzyme (inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase) that the responsible immune cells — lymphocytes — need to multiply, sharply reducing the rejection response. Myfortic is used together with ciclosporin and corticosteroids as prescribed by your transplant centre. The gastro-resistant coating releases the medicine past the stomach, designed to reduce the stomach upset seen with standard mycophenolate.

Dosage and how to take Myfortic

  • Usual adult dose: 720mg twice daily — two 360mg tablets morning and evening
  • Take on an empty stomach: at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food, consistently
  • Swallow whole — never crush, chew or split; breaking the coating exposes you to hazardous powder
  • Never stop or skip doses without your transplant team’s instruction; missed doses risk rejection

Essential safety information

Mycophenolic acid causes severe birth defects and miscarriage. Women who can become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before starting and use two reliable forms of contraception during treatment and for 6 weeks after; men should follow the leaflet’s guidance. Regular blood counts are required — report fever, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or infection signs immediately. Long-term immunosuppression raises skin-cancer risk: use high-SPF sun protection. Avoid live vaccines. Common effects: diarrhoea, nausea, headache, low white cells.

Storage and refills

Store below 30°C in the original blister to protect from moisture. Set up a monthly refill reminder with our pharmacist so you never run out — we hold stock specifically for repeat transplant patients and confirm batch and DRAP registration on every supply.
