Uses of the Zytiga 250mg Tablets

Zytiga 250mg is primarily used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic prostate cancer). Specifically, it is prescribed for:

Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC):
This is prostate cancer that continues to grow even when the amount of testosterone in the body is reduced to very low levels.

Metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC):
This is an earlier stage of metastatic prostate cancer where hormone therapy can still slow the disease.

How Does Zytiga 250mg Tablets Work?

Zytiga 250mg (active ingredient: Abiraterone Acetate) works by blocking the production of androgens (male hormones) in the body especially testosterone, which fuels the growth of prostate cancer cells.

Here’s how it works step-by-step:

Inhibition of the CYP17 Enzyme:
Zytiga targets an enzyme called CYP17A1, which is crucial in producing androgens in the adrenal glands, testes, and even in the tumor itself.

Reduction in Testosterone Levels:
By inhibiting this enzyme, Zytiga significantly reduces the body’s overall testosterone production, even in places where standard hormone therapies cannot reach.

Slowing Cancer Growth:
With lower testosterone levels, prostate cancer cells are deprived of the hormone they need to grow, which slows or stops the progression of the disease.

Combined with Prednisone:
Zytiga is given with prednisone (a corticosteroid) to help prevent side effects caused by the drop in cortisol levels, which can occur due to CYP17 inhibition.

How Should You Take Zytiga 250mg Tablets?

Take Zytiga once daily as a single dose with water, swallowing tablets whole do not crush, chew, or split them.

Always take Zytiga on an empty stomach:

No food for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour after dosing. Food significantly raises drug absorption and can increase side effects.

The recommended dosage of Zytiga (abiraterone acetate) 250 mg tablets is 1,000 mg orally once daily, which corresponds to taking two 250 mg tablets or four 250 mg tablets once a day. This dose is administered together with prednisone:

For metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), prednisone is given at 5 mg twice daily.

For metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), prednisone is given at 5 mg once daily.

Patients should also receive a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analog concurrently or have undergone bilateral orchiectomy.
