Additional Details
Uses of Xolair 150mg Injection
Xolair 150mg injection is specifically used for two main conditions:
1. Moderate to severe persistent allergic asthma:
It is prescribed as an add-on therapy to standard asthma medication like inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta2-agonists, not as a replacement.
It is only for those with positive allergy tests to year-round allergens (like dust mites, mold, or pet dander), reduced lung function, and frequent asthma symptoms despite maximum doses of standard medication.
2. Chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives):
It is used for adults and adolescents (12 years and older) who have hives that don’t adequately respond to conventional antihistamine treatment.
How Does It Work?
It works differently from other allergy medications by targeting the underlying immune system response.
For allergic asthma:
IgE overload: In allergic asthma, the body overreacts to allergens by producing too much of a protein called immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE attaches to specific receptors on immune cells called mast cells.
Histamine release: When IgE binds to mast cells, it triggers them to release a chemical called histamine. Histamine causes inflammation in the airways, leading to symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
Xolair’s intervention: Xolair acts like a decoy, binding to IgE before it can reach the mast cell receptors. This prevents histamine release and reduces the inflammatory response in the airways.
For chronic hives:
Unknown trigger: In chronic hives, the exact cause of the histamine release is unknown, but it’s believed to be related to an abnormal immune response.
Mast cell activation: Similar to asthma, histamine released from mast cells causes the symptoms of hives, including itching, swelling, and redness.
Xolair’s effect: Xolair again acts as a decoy, binding to IgE and preventing it from activating mast cells and releasing histamine. This reduces the number and severity of hives.
How Should You Take Xolair Injection?
When you receive the injection, it should be placed just under the skin. We’ll determine the dose and how often you need the injection based on your weight and initial IgE levels. It might take 5-10 seconds for us to give you the injection because the solution is a bit thick. Make sure not to receive more than 150 mg at one injection site.
If your dose is over 150 mg, we’ll split it between two or more sites. Each injection site should be at least 1 inch away from others, and we’ll aim for your thigh or abdomen, steering clear of the 2-inch area around your navel. Only if a caregiver is administering the injection, can the outer part of your upper arms be used.
Recommended Dosage of Xolair 150mg Injection
The recommended dosage of Xolair 150mg injection varies based on the condition being treated.
For chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), the recommended dosage is 150 mg or 300 mg administered by subcutaneous injection every 4 weeks.
The injection should be given just under the skin, and the dose and frequency of injection are based on weight and pre-treatment IgE levels. The most common side effects of Xolair include injection site reactions, viral infections, upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, headache, and sore throat.
Warnings and Precautions of Xolair Injection
Warnings:
Some people have experienced severe, life-threatening allergic reactions to Xolair, either immediately after the injection or hours later. It’s possible to have an allergic reaction even if you’ve been using Xolair regularly for more than a year.
If you show any signs of an allergic reaction to Xolair, such as hives, rash, anxiety, flushing, feeling faint, chest tightness, wheezing, difficulty breathing, rapid or weak heartbeat, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Asthma often requires treatment with various medications. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and read the guides provided with each medication. Do not alter your medication doses or schedule without consulting your doctor.
If you’re taking an oral steroid medication, don’t stop it suddenly as it might lead to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. If your asthma medications don’t seem to help with managing or preventing attacks, discuss this with your doctor. Your symptoms may not improve immediately after starting Xolair, but for the best results, continue receiving the injections as instructed. If there’s no improvement after a few weeks, have a talk with your doctor.
For the best benefit, use Xolair regularly and make sure you get your prescription refilled before you completely run out.
Precautions:
You shouldn’t use this medication if you’re allergic to omalizumab or any inactive ingredients in Xolair. For a full list of ingredients, check the Xolair ingredients list.
